  1. Hey dude. So rather than just criting your painting, I thought I'd give an overall crit on your work as a whole and maybe give some ideas for digital painting techniques. But to start, I think your painting looks really similar to your other ones. I'm starting to recognize patterns in your work: sci-fi, dark cool bright colors, some fast-looking vehicle. I would say that's a generalization of your paintings. Not to say that that's bad. It's just that it's been done to death.

I would challenege you to try something completely different. I would go so far as to not do your homework for next week (I know it's hard cuz it's the last class and all). Instead, spend an entire day looking at reference photos of anything interesting (slums, ghettos, planets, etc). Then afterwards, try spending the rest of the week just messing around in photoshop - open up a new canvas and starting pushing paint around. The idea is not to think about what you're painting, but rather, think about "how" you're painting. If you like to paint fast, then I would suggest you paint really slow. I'm guessing you like to paint with an ellipse brush with soft edges. I would suggest painting with some random crazy brush with hard edges at full opacity. And spend like a 2-3 hours just mixing and filling your canvas up with paint. Try finding abstract shapes and try to experiment with color and brushes. Forget about doing a painting for homework or for work. Seriously, forget all that crap! Try and ask yourself what you do and think while painting: do you think of sci-fi while painting? Then think of something else, like cowboys or samurais. Do you like to using lots of blue and green? Then try using lots of burgundy and orange. The idea is to try and find some newer techniques that works for you (and remember everyone works differently) Just because your instructor says not to do somethng, doesn't mean you shouldn't try it anyway. My suggestion is to try completely new techniques, even if you feel uncomfortable. Try painting on one single layer for an hour straight and see what happens.

Hope that helps. I wanna start seeing some crazy stuff man!

  2. yo I totally know what you're getting at. Thanks for pointing it out. Honestly, that's exactly what I need. However, every single assignment done so far has been to experiment with a different technique that we were taught. So yea, I would choose very very outplayed subject matter just to have some sort of comparison to see if my technique is successful or not. So originality has not been the key point to my work thus far. But thanks for pointing it out. It's something we should always be thinking about for the future.
