More speed paintings (45 minutes each)

So I spent the first 15 minutes using a brush I've never used, listening to some bomb ass music and closing my eyes.  Whatever shapes came out is what I painted.  Not quite how I want them to be, but it's a good experimenting start.  Let me know what you guys think.

  1. Nice! I actually like these. I think it's a big departure from what you usually do, which is good. I especially like the mood in your paintings. It's pretty dark and ominous, which I like. I think it has alot to do with the way you treat your colors and atmosphere. Your colors are way more mid-tonish and realistic. Overall, I think your designs are getting more sophisticated. I dig the design of your female character too.

My major criticism has alot to do with your illustration skills. I know characters aren't really your thing. But I would strongly advise you take the time to study anatomy. I know you probably don't have the time because of work and volleyball and all, but I really feel the next hurdle for your jump over is illustrating characters, and I think it would be a nice break from environments. At the very least, I would do some studies on proportions and gesture. I know you've got sort of an Anime-ish style, so you might want to study anime characters. I know it sounds like typical hw, but I seriously think learning to illustrate will greatly improve your digital painting. If I have time, I'll try and do a quick sketch-over your female character to try and show how I would approach tightning it up (not to say that my way is the right way), but it might help you to see how your sketch can be taken to a finished-level.

  2. Thanks dude. Yea def need more time spent on figure studies. That's always been a nightmare for me. I think my next step will be to do some speed paintings on a few characters and I'll pick my fav and try to finish it for next week.
