Speed Paintings to Finished Paintings

Here are my final paintings for Red Engine.  Each took about 3-4 hours total to do.

  1. Awesome stuff Jeff,

My favorite is the middle by far. The city one is great, but I think for that type of painting, the edges and textures need to be harder and sharper. Some of the overlays are competing with each other a little bit, making the overall look slightly muddy with overlays.

The middle painting I think displays the best light and color. The one and only thing that bothers me is the staleness of the vehicles. The fg vehicle works, but it seems like you just scaled it and mirrored it to create the middle ground one. It causes this tangency since both fronts of the vehicle point towards the center of the painting. Also be careful with the perspective. The left rear vent looks like it's placed where the center line should be.

The bottom paining is cool, but I think it could use a secondary color somewhere. Something cool maybe would give those fg pipes extra pop and create more depth.

    Good work.

  2. One thing my instructor said about the second one, is that my values are all over the place. I agree. He said that the foreground ship kinda gets lost with the rock formations behind it.

And you're right about me just mirroring the foreground ship. lol! I knew that would kill me. I just got lazy.

I think out of these three, I'm going to try and finish up the first one. I agree, that it definitely needs some tightening up.

  3. One technique that Steve uses a lot for mid ground back ground vehicles is to paint in a new silhouette, add in some initial values based on the lighting, then copy the first vehicle you did and use that as a soft light texture. It's quick and easy and definitely a good short cut if you're feeling lazy.
